Soweto homemakers restore dignity, ease suffering
By Marian Lucas Jefferies
A year ago a 40-something-year-old mother volunteered at the Soweto Home Based Care Givers Co-op. She was dedicated to teaching people about HIV and AIDS prevention. Her husband brought the disease home to her and left when she was diagnosed. When I saw her in December, the Soweto homemakers were caring for her, her six children and her mother. She was emaciated and needed crutches as well as two people to help her get to the living/dining room of the two-bedroom home where she wanted to talk to me. The week before I met her she was hospitalized for treatment of a foot infected with gangrene. As a former nurse I was surprised her foot was not amputated before her release. Upon further reflection I understood why scarce and valuable health care resources would not be used on an end-stage AIDS patient. Her health problems will be resolved soon enough.

Newfoundland bishop sets rules for clergy
by Solange De Santis
Anglican Journal
Jan. 14
Bishop Cyrus Pitman, of the diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, said he expects clergy in his diocese who are involved in the Anglican Network in Canada and “working to the establishment of a parallel jurisdiction to the Anglican Church of Canada” would “do the honourable thing and resign their positions, relinquishing their licences to exercise ordained ministry in this church.”

“The children have lost their fear of the infirmary now and sometimes will come up to have the tiniest scratch attended to. It is amusing to see how some of the kiddies act when they do come. They will just point to the part that hurts and don’t say a word – it is then up to me to find out how serious the hurt is.”

"How high do you want your mitre?" This was not a question that Canon Linda Nicholls, the newly elected suffragan bishop of Toronto, had thought of when she set out to find an episcopal outfit. But now she was in a vestment store facing a selection of traditional, pointed bishops' hats. "Which mitre best represents my ministry?" she wondered.
