Joy in the journey

Shared ministry in the upper St. John River Valley

by Fran Bedell, Bonnie (Bonita) LeBlanc, Robert (Bob) LeBlanc and Amanda Longmoore

In the beginning …
Bishop Claude Miller called a clergy team together and asked: “Is a shared ministry possible in this region? If it is, how could it happen, and what would it look like?” We thought it was possible and likened the process to weaving a cloth or making a patchwork quilt. Read the story.

Canada

This zone is off the grid.

Use of electrical-, battery- or fossil fuel-powered devices is prohibited until further notice.

Thanks for your respect!

If you notice these reminders posted over the light switch or hot-water tap in your church basement, chances are good your parish has hosted a PWRDF youth Off the Grid event, where young people fast from electricity and fossil fuels for the weekend. To deepen their own ecological awareness and raise money in support of PWRDF partners, young people are eschewing iPods, phones and DVD players and forgoing the luxuries of hot water, ceiling fans, microwaves and electric lights for one weekend. But rather than focusing on being without these conveniences, the group is directed to educational games. They calculate their own use of energy by measuring carbon footprints, enjoy a little late-night gardening, concoct creative construction projects like building a windmill, enjoy no-cooking recipes, sharing an environmental eucharist and make a plan to take what they learn back into their everyday lives.

In the Diocese of Huron, where one such event was held, participants from the Essex deanery youth ministry camped out in tents, cooked their food over a campfire and entertained themselves by telling stories and singing. As they looked for firewood they realized they were connecting to an everyday reality for many children around the world. It is this generation of young people who will lead us into a new future of environmental practice, and PWRDF celebrates their wisdom and dedication to the cause.

Stewardship Quotable

From A Reading from the Homilies of St. Gregory the Great on the Gospels

"I want to advise you to leave everything, but I do not want to be presumptuous. If therefore, you are unable to abandon everything which the world offers, you must so hold those things that are of this world that you may not be held by them in the world; that earthly interests may be possessed not be the possessor, and that what you have should be under the control of your mind. Otherwise, if your mind is bound by the love of earthly things, it may itself rather be possessed by its own possessions.

"Dad says, 'Go easy on the butter, kids, its three dollars a pound!'"
