Archbishop re-launches Cursillo

By Chris McMullen

Cursillo is Spanish for a short course on practical Christianity. Last spring more than 70 members of the New Brunswick Anglican Cursillo community gathered at Christ Church (Parish) Church in Fredericton to praise God and encourage one-another in their Christian walk, as well as to receive a new secretariat and new operating guidelines, from Archbishop Claude Miller. Everyone present was very enthusiastic and grateful for the launching of a full secretariat and the mandate of evangelism and discipleship training the archbishop gave to our community in the revised guidelines. The new secretariat includes people who have served before, new people, and representatives from many different regions of the diocese. Read the story.

Parish to host Conference on Congregational Development Conference
Inspired by Bishop Edward Salmon and the Nicodemus project, and endorsed by Archbishop Claude Miller, St. Mary and St. Bartholomew’s Church in Saint John will host a congregational development conference Oct. 29 - 30 with guest speaker and workshop leader the Rev. Chuck Owens, rector of the Church of the Cross in Bluffton, South Carolina. Mr. Owens was recommended by Bishop Salmon who says: “As Father Owens was my right hand man in congregational development in the Diocese of South Carolina, he is a superb proclaimer of the Gospel. He has the ability to empower others.” Parishes throughout the diocese are welcome to participate in this conference. There is no registration fee, however, registration is required by Oct. 22 and a free will offering will be received. Supplementary to the Conference, two mission services will be held on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1. For more information, please contact the St. Mary and St. Bartholomew's office at 696-1347.

We of the Diocese of Fredericton offer prayers and thanksgiving for the consecration of Thomas Alexander Corston as Ninth Bishop of Moosonee at St. Anthony's Cathedral in Timmons, Ontario at one o'clock today. A short service of installation followed at St. Matthew's Cathedral.
+Tom served in the parishes of St. Margaret's and Chatham in the Diocese of Fredericton in the 1980s and early 1990s. He and his wife Ruth (Shepperd) have deep roots here. National Church Development workshop

Day-long National Church Development (NCD) workshop at Christ Church (Parish) Church in Fredericton, led by Bill Bickle of NCD. This event is intended to equip clergy and senior parish lay leadership in the NCD process leading to church growth. Registration information to follow. Leadership for this important opportunity for congretional growth and development for churches in our diocese is provided by the Archdeaconry of St. Andrews -- contact the Regional Deans, Christopher McMullen <christopher.mcmummen at angican.nb.ca> and John Matheson <john.matheson at anglican.nb.ca>.
Natural Church Development (NCD) is the God-given inspiration of Christian Schwarz of the Institute for Christian Development in Germany. Between 1994 and 1996 he and Christoph Schalk examined 1000 churches in 32 countries to research common characteristics that differentiate healthy, growing churches from those in decline or stagnated, regardless of culture, denomination, theological or liturgical preference. They discovered that resilient, growing churches share eight quality characteristics.
• Empowering Leadership
• Gift-based Ministry
• Passionate Spirituality
• Effective Structures
• Inspiring Worship
• Holistic Small Groups
• Need-oriented Evangelism
• Loving Relationships

Today nearly 70,000 surveys have been conducted in more than 70 countries. Churches find they can measure quality, reduce guess-work, streamline programming and reduce busy-work. Most importantly, they find renewed alignment with God’s purpose for them and produce lasting health and fruitfulness.

Things I Learned on Le Tour de PWRDF
Suzanne Rumsey lists 19 things she learned on Le Tour de PWRDF

I returned to the PWRDF office yesterday (Monday) to a warm welcome from my colleagues – a welcome banner, cake, flowers, the whole nine yards – and our twice-yearly cleaning day. Nothing like a little filing to get the post-Tour juices flowing! Many thanks to my colleagues for their wonderful, good-humoured kindness. Today I spent a bit of time looking at the photos I took over the course of Le Tour de PWRDF. So many good memories of people encountered and places visited. And it reminded me of the many things I learned on this journey. Herewith a list of those learnings, some of them sublime others ridiculous, but all good to have learned.  Read her list. (Scroll down to the June 30 entry.)

Heavenly Humour

Diocesan News

A young couple struggling to make ends meet sat down to dinner — a casserole prepared from leftovers found in the refrigerator.

"It seems to me I have already blessed the meat and rice," said the husband.

"And I've blessed the tomatoes and green beans," said the wife.

"So do we need to ask another blessing?" asked the husband.

"Of course we do," answered the wife. "The soup and bread crumbs aren't blessed yet!"
